Muhammad Abdullah

Honorable Secretary to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh Mr. Muhammad Abdullah joined Ministry of Industries as Secretary on 26 July 2017. Mr. Muhammad Abdullah was born on 28 February 1960 in Jamalpur. His father’s name is Mr. Mosir Uddin Ahmed and mother’s name is Rajia khatun. He obtained his Masters Degree in Statistics from Dhaka University. He belongs to B.C.S. (Adm)1984 batch. He was a probationer in Brahmanbaria. He has vast working experience both in field and secretariat level. Mr. Abdullah worked as Upazila Magistrate in Chunarughata and Baniyachong, Habiganj and Hazigonj, Chandpur. He performed his duties as Revenue Deputy Collector in Natore and Dhaka. As Upazila Nirbahi Officer, he renderd his duties in Bhola Sadar and Louhogonj in Munshigonj. After that he joined Ministry of Pubic Administration and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare as Senior Assistant Secretary and Deputy Secretary respectively.
 
Dimitri Ayvatoglu

Mr. Ayvatoglu is leading the Special Projects department of the LEYAL Ship Recycling Group since 2004. He has also served as the ship recycling industrial advisor to the national delegation of Turkey to the IMO during the development of the Hong Kong Convention. Mr. Ayvatoglu has coordinated and supervised over 400 ship recycling trades, having concluded the highest profile ship recycling projects in Turkey, including clients such as Oil Majors, European Navies and the largest and most reputable shipping companies. In his capacity as an official advisor, Mr. Ayvatoglu has contributed to the drafting of the Hong Kong Convention and has attended numerous regional and international workshops in Europe and the Far East under the auspices of the IMO and the United Nations Environment Program. Furthermore, he has participated at the Diplomatic Conference for the adoption of the IMO Hong Kong Convention on the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships in 2009.

John Kornerup Bang is Head of Sustainability Strategy and shared value initiatives at Maersk and brings 20 years of experience working on sustainable globalization. Currently in Maersk, he drives the development of the overall direction and priorities on sustainability as well as work on solving larger systemic issues related to global logistics through combining commercial muscle with multi-stakeholder partnerships. Over the past three years John served as advisor from Maersk to Ban Ki Moon’s High Level Advisory Group on sustainable transportation including work on the links between the SDGs and transportation.

Rakesh Bhargava was formerly General Manager and Head of the IHM, Green Recycling and Lay-Up services of Wilhelmsen Ship Management having spent over 30 years with the company. He is a specialist in traditional end-to-end management of ships, a leading authority on the inventorying of hazardous materials, an expert on safe, innovative and environmentally correct recycling of ships, and was a pioneer in the conceptualization and implementation of both hot and cold lay-up of ships in safe and secure places. Rakesh has a proven understanding of shipping having served his stint at sea from Junior Engineer to Chief Engineer, ascended to Fleet Manager, a position he held for many years, prior to being a GM. He holds a Graduate Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering, a certificate in General Management for Shipping, Certificate of Competency as Chief Engineer and several other professional qualifications.
 
Tom Peter Blankestijn

Tom Peter started his maritime career in 1984 for container operator Nedlloyd. He has held various positions since as project- and marketing manager North America services. After the merger of P&O with Nedlloyd he worked as trade manager North America services. He was appointed in a position as Maritime Policies and Regulatory Affairs globally for P&O Nedlloyd in 2000. He was one of the initiators of the ship recycling project in China, which he is responsible for since 2002. He actively participated in setting-up and improving the project and was directly involved in the discussion of the IMO convention. In 2011 he started Sea2Cradle, a consultancy company specifically serving the shipping industry on Ship Recycling according to the latest EU regulation and Hong Kong Convention.
 
Jon Chaplin

Jon is the producer of TradeWinds' Ship Recycling Forum and Shipowners Forums. In April 2018, he takes up a new role with maritime recruitment specialist Spinaker Global as a headhunter.  After Marlborough College, Jon studied business at university and then joined Business Meetings Ltd, an organiser of large maritime events including the LNG conference and exhibition, Gastech.   Moving on and after a period as Director of Events at London's Business Design Centre, he joined TradeWinds in 1995 as Sales Manager, to open and develop a commerical presence for the paper in London, Stamford and Singapore and becomming Commercial Director in 1996. Having successfully launched TradeWinds first conference, Shipping China in 2004, he went on to establish TradeWinds Events in May 2006 and joined the TradeWinds' Board of Directors in the same year.

Roger Charles is a Director in the Environmental and Social Risk Management team for Standard Chartered in Singapore. He is responsible for delivering technical environmental and safety expertise to business transactions and clients globally; ensuring project funding adheres to international standards on sustainability and host country requirements.  With over 15 years’ experience as a health, safety and environmental (HSE) professional, Roger has broad international experience, having spent a number of years in Europe, Africa and South East Asia in various roles including consultancy, Oil and Gas offshore and onshore exploration and development. His areas of specialisation include technical environmental and safety engineering, environmental and social Impact Assessment (ESIA), occupational safety and group sustainability.  He joined the Bank in 2015 from Tullow Oil, where he spent six years in health, safety and environmental (HSE) focused roles. Previously, Roger spent four years as senior consultant for RPS Energy in the UK.

Narinder Dheir worked in the corporate banking sector in the City of London from 1981 to 1991 and has been involved in the ship recycling industry since 1992. Originally as one of the founder partners in Electra Maritime and since 2003 as CEO of NKD Maritime Ltd. He is involved in overseeing the Group’s financial and S&P operations and has been extensively involved in the development of green facilities in Alang India with his partners at Shree Ram Group.

Martin Dorsman has been the Secretary General of the European Community Shipowners’ Associations since the 1st of November 2017. From June 2011 to the date of his appointment as Secretary General he had been the Managing Director of the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners (KVNR). From September 2006 to June 2011 he had been the KVNR’s deputy Managing Director. Before joining the KVNR he had been employed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and as such had been working on macro-economic policy, regional economic policy and R&D-policy. In 1999 he joined the ministry of Transport, where he was responsible for fiscal maritime policy and other maritime policies. The latter two years of his employment at the ministry of Transport he was Head of unit for the team responsible for the Betuwe freight rail track, the dedicated rail track from the port of Rotterdam to Germany.

Stephanie is an expert in collaborative processes, change and sustainable development. She also oversees work in India and Asia Pacific and has worked with companies and industry sectors on making sustainable business happen for almost two decades. Steph’s background combines science and change management. Following her Masters in Environment and Conservation, she worked at the Industrial Society, specialising in strategy and change consultancy. Steph went on to set up one of the first CSR practices at the Work Foundation, and joined Forum in 2002. Stephanie is co-founder and co-chair of the Sustainable Shipping Initiative, a trustee of the Travel Foundation and member of the Firmenich Sustainability Board. She writes and speaks extensively on how to create big change including ‘The Big Shift: how to create system innovation’.

In 2000, he was appointed Managing Director of Hapag-Lloyd Container Line GmbH, responsible for worldwide business administration. In 2005, he took over responsibility for ship and container management, cooperations and purchasing. From 2009 to 2014, Firmin was Managing Director of the division Yield Management & Network. As of July 2014 Anthony J. Firmin has taken over the responsibility for the global shipping business as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Emilien Gasc joined the European Commission's Directorate-General for Environment as policy officer for ship recycling in August 2013. He previously occupied various positions in the EU executive (DG Energy, Executive Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, DG Employment). Before starting a career with the European institutions, Emilien Gasc was a consultant with the International Energy Agency (2009) and represented the European consumer organisations ANEC and BEUC in technical and political discussions on Ecodesign and Energy Labelling (2010-2012).

Henning holds a degree as Environmental Engineer (Diplomingenieur, Dipl.-Ing.) and is engaged in various fields of maritime environmental protection since the year 2000. He is an internationally recognized expert for all aspects of green ship recycling and has established GSR Services GmbH (Green Ship Recycling Services) for supporting all stakeholders for their cost effective preparation and fulfilment of Hong Kong Convention and EU-Regulation on Ship Recycling. In addition he´s guest professor at the World Maritime University (WMU).

 
Alfred Hartmann

A trained shipbroker and shipping merchant, Alfred Hartmann started his seafaring time as a cadet with Norddeutscher Lloyd. He graduated in Industrial Engineering & Management and attained his Master’s license for deep-sea vessels of any size and any type. He gained maritime experience as Nautical Officer and Captain in worldwide trade and worked as newbuilding supervisor and head of seafaring personnel. In 1981, he established his own shipping company: Hartmann Reederei. Expanding the business over three decades, the Hartmann Group became one of Germany’s largest shipping companies, with a fleet of about 180 vessels and more than 5,000 employees on board and ashore. Alfred Hartmann held the post of CEO of Hartmann AG until June 2008, when he passed the baton to his son and assumed the position of Chairman of the Supervisory Board. He is the President of the German Shipowners’ Association (VDR) and member of the Advisory Committees of NORD/LB and classification society DNV GL.

Junichi Hirata began his career at Japan’s Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism) in 1985, shortly after graduating from Yokohama National University with a degree in naval architecture, In the 19 years he spent with the Ministry, he not only worked to ensure ship safety, but also spent time working at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as well as the Japanese Embassy in Singapore. In 2004, he left his position as Director for Global Environment at the Ministry’s Policy Bureau to help oversee the establishment of the new R&D program at Japan Ship Machinery Equipment Association (JSMEA). After 3 years’ assignment of General Manager for Planning Division at JSMEA, he joined ClassNK in 2007, where he helped found the ClassNK the Ship Recycling Team, of which he remains a core member.

Mohammed Zahirul Islam joined his family business in July 2004 after completing his studies from Australia. As Managing Director of PHP ship breaking and recycling ind ltd, he is responsible for the day to day operations of the recycling facility which employs 300 workers and staff. He took the bold decision to invest heavily to upgrade the facility and it became the first recycling facility in Bangladesh to achieve statement of compliance under Hong Kong Convention.

Prior to this he was a working with Arihant Ship Breakers which is a wreck removal and Salvage company and worked on 4 project's from 2010 - 2013. Prior to commencing work Siddhant pursued a course in London via which he became a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbroker's.

Nitin Kanakiya has a Diploma in Automobile Engineering (1981). He started his career with Re-rolling Mill. He has been involved in the Ship Recycling Industry since 1984. He has acted as Office Bearer in SRIA and Rolling Mills Association for many years. He mainly deals in subjects of Customs and Central Excise for the Ship Recycling and Re-rolling Mill Industry, over and above Safety, Environment and Taxes. He is Member of the Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) for both, Customs and Central Excise, in Bhavnagar Commissionorate. He has been Joint Secretary (2003-04, 2012-13) and Secretary (2013-15 & now 2017-2019) of the Ship Recycling Industries Association (India). He represents Ship recycling Industry at International Forums.
 
Abhinav Kumar

Abhinav was born in an Indian business family. He spent his early training years working in the family ship recycling yards and steel mill. Then he ventured out to U.A.E. at the age of 25 to mark a niche for him in trading of metal scrap. After working with metal scrap for 5 years, in 2008 he moved to Singapore to start cash buying of ships. Ace Exim Pte. Ltd. is a respectable name in the Cash Buying business and deals with most of the big names in the industry. Ace Exim also trades in Metal Scrap, Timber and Agro products. A Mechanical Engineer by qualification, he understands trade and finance equally well. Managerial skills are his strong suit. He leads a team of committed professionals spread across continents.

Darren had initially joined Clarksons in 1983 and began his shipping life within the Sale and Purchase department assisting the broking desks before establishing himself as a broker in the recycling market. He left the company for 9 years working with another London broking house before returning to Clarkson over five years ago where he has continued to conclude a large volume of tonnage. Having worked in the recycling industry for over 30 years, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience within the recycling sector and has built strong relationships and friendships with those people who are active in this industry on a daily basis and helped to provide assistance to many clients interested in selling their units for ‘Green’ recycling.

Takanori Maeda began his career at Ministry of Transport (renamed Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism) in 1999. In 2017, he was appointed as Director, Japan Ship Centre (JETRO) in London. Since then, he has participated as a delegation of the Japanese government at international conferences such as IMO, OECD and so on. He has also served a vice chairperson of the OECD Council Working Party on Shipbuilding (WP6). In the 18 years he has worked to ensure ship safety, development of maritime industry, innovation of maritime technology, etc. In 2010 he was responsible for the ship recycling project implemented in Japan.

In 1998, Mr. Matsuzaki joined Japan Council of Metalworkers’ Unions(JCM) , an umbrella organization representing the unions in Japan’s metal industry such as Automobile, Steel, Shipbuilding, Machinery, Electrical and Electronics. He was responsible for proposing and instituting industrial policies aimed at maintaining and strengthening the manufacturing base and ensuring jobs, as well as promote solidarity and exchanges with workers involved in manufacturing around the world. In 2010, he was appointed as Director Shipbuilding-Shipbreaking at International Metalworkers’ Federation(IMF) and in 2012, he was also appointed as Director ICT, Electrical and Electronics when IndustriALL Global Union formed in 2012 through a merger of the IMF, ICEM(International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions) and ITGLWF(International Textile, Garment and Leather Workers’ Federationin), and is representing over 50 million members from more than 140 countries across supply chains in mining, energy, and manufacturing sectors at the global level.

Mr. Gaurav Sanjay Mehta is a commerce graduate and joined his father's business in 2010. An energetic, ambitious person who has developed a mature and responsible approach to any task that he undertakes, or situation that he is presented with.  He manages the cash buying business (Purchase and Sale of Ships for Recycling) for Best Oasis Ltd.  Under his leadership, Best Oasis Ltd has successfully purchased and sold 150+ vessels including FPSO's, Tankers, Bulk Carriers, Container Ships, Reefers, fish Factory, Specialized vessels etc for recycling.

 
Nikos Mikelis
Dr. Nikos Mikelis graduated in naval architecture from the University of Newcastle and obtained Master’s and Doctorate degrees from London University. He has worked in ship classification; for a shipping company; and for the International Maritime Organization from where he recently retired. He currently works under the banner Mikelis Consulting, U.K. and is a non-executive director of GMS Inc, U.A.E. He has written around 50 learned papers and numerous articles in the maritime press. He is a freeman of the City of London.

Chetan Patel, Director of Shree Ram Group of industries, having 4 HKC compliant yards certified by Class NK. With an experience of 24 years in ship recycling business, he is known as one of the forerunners of this industry. An electronic engineer by qualification, he embarked on this journey at the age of 21 and has recycled around 280 ships till date. He is the pioneer of handling hazardous material and is renowned for handling asbestos from JMC Environment France. His expertise transcends the boundaries of the ship recycling business as he is also a Director in the ASU tonnage plant of Shree Ram Oxy-gas. He has achieved milestones in the ship recycling industry and has been covered in Forbes Asia.

Farrukh is our young colleague at Gadani actively engaged with Recycling Industry for past about 9 years after his graduation from the University. He belongs to a merchants' family involved in a diversified trade & industry including ship recycling for 20 years. His father heads the family group involved in trade & industry within tge country and overseas. Farrukh is a member of Central Executive Committee of PSBA and is actively engaged with matters relating to Safety & Environments at Gadani.
 
Md. Mizanur Rahman

Mr. Md. Mizanur Rahman is a career Civil Servant of the Government of Bangladesh. Currently, he is serving in the Ministry of Industries (MoInd) as Deputy Secretary. Before that position he worked in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for a period of three years as National Project Manager for the ‘Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling in Bangladesh (SENSREC) Phase I’. Since 2013 he has been working with the MoInd and IMO for the development of country's ship recycling industry. He contributed as a team member to the development of recently promulgated Bangladesh Ship Recycling Act 2018. He completed Bachelor degree and Masters in Agricultural Science from Bangladesh Agricultural University. Later he got MBA from University of West London, UK.

Jennifer is the Senior Ship Recycling Specialist for the Lloyd’s Register Group (LR) with responsibility for development and management of LR’s ship recycling services, including IHM, and end of life consultancy services. Based in the UK, Jennifer joined LR in 2015 with a background in research, science and policy. In addition to service delivery, Jennifer is responsible for developing technical procedures and guidance in line with industry standards and legislation. She represents LR’s ship recycling interests on a number of external bodies, including the SSI (Sustainable Shipping Initiative) and ISRA (the International Ship Recycling Association).
 
Phil Rozier

Phil graduated with Honours in Physics in 1998 from Sussex University in the UK. He firstly trained as an asbestos analyst both in the laboratory, and in the field, carrying out on site analysis of materials. Now proficient in a range of hazardous materials, including highly regulated asbestos management; certified by the British Occupational Hygiene Society, Phil also holds NEBOSH General Certificate for Health and Safety and has been instrumental in gaining Lucion’s reputation for excellence. Specialising in hazardous material consultancy, Phil has grown Lucion's international reputation and contributed to the overall growth of the business. Lucion now have over 300 operatives working world wide. Phil set up Lucion Marine (part of the Lucion Services group) in 2009 to serve the marine industries growing demand for Hazardous Material management. Lucion gained one of the first Lloyd's Register accredited certificates for the production of Inventory of Hazardous Materials (both sampling and analysis).

Ilker Sari is a business owner, who manages the Rota Shipping Inc. His company is a “Cash Buyer” of end-of-life vessels for recycling. Ilker studied International Trade Management in University. After completion of his education, he worked for his family company, which operated a ship recycling yard in Turkey which also sold vessels to other recyclers in the area. During these years, he played an active role in Ship Recyclers Association of Turkey (SRAT) as well. He took part in the delegations of SRAT during the meetings, held by IMO and UNEP regarding the ratification and implementation process of the Basel Convention to the Ship Recycling Industry. At the end of 2009, he decided to go his own way and founded Rota Shipping Inc. He is trying to develop his business and vision in parallel to developing quality standards of the ship recycling industry. His aim is to be the owner of the most reputable and professional organization in the ship recycling industry…
 
Maria Skipper Schwenn

Maria Skipper Schwenn joined the Danish Shipping in 2009 and represents the political interests of the Danish ship owners at national and international level. Maria heads the department of Security, Environment and Maritime Research, which is responsible for technical, nautical and political aspects of security, environment and maritime research. Piracy, safety, security, climate and environmental regulation - including ship recycling, occupational Health and corporate social responsibility (CSR) are among the topics covered by the department. Maria has been deeply involved in the various discussions related to ship recycling for the past years and visited Alang, India in 2015. Before 2009, Maria worked as political advisor to a member of the European Parliament. Maria holds a master’s degree in Political Science from University of Southern Denmark as well as a master’s degree in European Politics and Administration from the College of Europe, Bruges, Belgium.

Reuben Segal is the COO and Founder of Aqualis Offshore and has been in the oil and gas industry for the past 20 years having undertaken demo inspections for the past 15 years and completed over 200 inspections successfully over this period. Mr Segal has also carried out all demo surveys for every semi-subs and jackups which have been beached in the Indian Sub-continent to date. His background is a Naval Architect with Masters Degree from Newcastle University in UK.

Since July 2013, Yasmin Sultana has worked as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Industries. Before that she worked as Deputy Secretary in this Ministry from 26 September 2010 to 18 July 2013. She is involved in policy related matters as well as Ship Recycling Sector of the Ministry. She formulated the National Industrial Policy, Handicrafts Policy and Bangladesh Ship Recycling Act and is also a Board member of Jamuna Fertilizer Company - an Organization of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) under the Ministry of Industries where she oversees the management, financial matters etc. relating to the company. In addition to her responsibilities, she is the National Project Director (NPM) of a Project “Safe and Environmentally Sound Ship Recycling in Bangladesh (Phase-1).

Keiji Tomoda

Keiji Tomoda started his shipping carrier with "K" Line in 1982, mainly involved with container/car carrier business sectors, setting up "K" Line-owned agencies in UK while stationed in London 6.5 years and Vietnam as well as arranging investmentin container terminals and handling alliance issues. Became General Manager of Global Operation Center for "K" Line’s container fleet and equipment in "K" line (Singapore) while in UK. In 2010 career was extended to cooperate in Planning and Maritime Industry Affairs at "K" Line's Tokyo Head Office. Having dual responsibilities as a member of Japan Shipowners' Association (JSA) since 2010, am now in charge as Chairman of Ship Recycling Committee of JSA. Have worked past 7 years with Ship Recycling issues at JSA and also Asian Shipowners' Association with periodical visits to various Ship Recycling yards, Yard Operators and concerned government parties in China, India, etc. Concurrently also hold title of Associate Director of "K" Line.

Marc graduated as a Naval Engineer and started of his career as a technical officer for the Royal Netherlands Air Force. After working for engineering companies, he founded his first consulting agency for asbestos, Adviesbureau van de Poel BV, in 2000. Since its foundation in 2000, this agency is officially recognized by the NL government and recently certified as approved supplier for IHMs by Lloyds Register. In 2009 he founded, van de poel | m.a.r.c (Marine Asbestos & Recycling Consultants), this agency is especially focused on the marine industry and a global supplier of Inventories of Hazardous Materials. van de poel | m.a.r.c is a founding member of the International HazMat Association (IHMA). Van de poel | ma.r.c is one of the founders of Kinship2020, a partnership of global suppliers of IHM’s.
 
Peter Wyntin

Peter started out his career as a maintance engineer and joined Van Heyghen Recycling in 1995. He is now Head of Recycling at Galloo (which took over Van Heyghen Recycling in 2002). Since March 2017 he is the Chairman of the European Ship Recyclers Group (ESR). He holds Diplomas in Health and Safety and Environmental Management.

Dr. C H Yeh is a shipping industry veteran with 38 years experience in Shipping business. He was the Managing Director at Yang Ming Shipping Europe GmbH at Hamburg Germany for over 10 years. His current position is the Chairman of Kuang Shipping Corp from September 2016. He graduated and received the doctor’s degree from the Department of Shipping and Transportation Management of the National Ocean University, Taiwan. Being the Chairman of Ship Recycling Committee under ASA (Asian Shipowners' Association), he is actively attending various occasion to promote the new international regulations for Ship recycling business.
