Julian Bray

Julian Bray is Editor-in-Chief of TradeWinds, the shipping business news publisher which since its launch 25 years ago has become a reference point for decision makers in the industry. During a career in business journalism, he has won awards for both reporting and editing and built a track record of product innovation having lead numerous newspaper, magazine and website launches and relaunches. In addition to his specialist knowledge of maritime commerce, he has also been a Correspondent for the Reuters news agency, written for national newspapers and magazines, and made television and radio appearances. Away from the office, a love of the natural work often takes him to wild and mountainous regions to walk, cycle, climb and watch wildlife with family and friends. He also has a passionate interest in politics, culture and music.
 
Chris Chatterton

Mr. Chatterton joined the Methanol Institute in February 2015, managing MI’s CIS, Asia Pacific and Middle East operations. Over the past 20 years, Mr. Chatterton has worked at the executive level across the energy, shipping, automobile, renewables and chemical sectors, where he has been responsible for creating strategy, fundraising, restructuring, crisis management and operations for both startups and multinationals. Most recently, Mr. Chatterton was Director of Oil & Gas for a vertically integrated, leading Eastern European family office with an annual turnover of USD 5 bln and core interests in fertilizer & chemical production. In this capacity, he was chiefly responsible strategy and ongoing fund raising efforts to support a 30 mln bbl per annum upstream production platform, associated gas-to-power program, and an integrated downstream strategy which included a 12 mln MT per annum refinery upgrade program, and a 550 outlet, full-service, retail petrol station network. After launching a successful business incubator in the Peace Corps, Kazakhstan, circa 1994, Chris discovered a passion for educating, connecting and guiding like-minded entrepreneurs. Since then, he has led several energy and agricultural organizations to successful IPOs in addition to numerous cross-border private placements in the EU, Asia, Middle East and CIS and is active in the start-up space as a mentor and investor. Mr. Chatterton is fluent in Russian and holds an EMBA from HEC Paris.

With 20-year experience in maritime industry, James has been involved in global shipping investment for 10 years. He took various managerial positions at Maersk, Stolt-Nielsen and the CSL Group. Most recently, he managed a maritime-focused investment portfolio at Fosun group. James holds a Bachelor degree in naval architecture from Shanghai Jiaotong University and a MBA degree from Dartmouth College.
 
Hsu Chih Chien

Founded in Shanghai in 1927, Eddie Steamship has been in continuous operation for 91 years. Chih-Chien Hsu is the third generation managing this family shipping line. From 1927-1950 its main service was passenger and general cargo along the coast of China and up the Yangtze River. After relocating to Taipei in 1950 the company expanded into the international general cargo trade first within the Far East then starting in the 1960’s it went global. Since the 1970’s the company has concentrated in the drybulk sector operating handysize up to capesize. In 2000 CC Hsu founded Courage Marine which listed in the Singapore Stock Exchange in 2005 and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2011. In 2007 MarineMoney named Courage as the top performing listed shipping company in the world and in 2009 Forbes designated Courage a “best under a billion” company in Asia. CC Hsu has also been active in the international maritime industry having served on the Board of Directors of the North of England and American P&I clubs, the China Container Terminal Corp. and the China Shipbuilding Corp. He has also served on the technical committees of ABS and GL, is a Director of the China Corp. Register of Shipping and the current Chairman of BV Taiwan Technical Committee.
 
Mark Darley

Based in Shanghai and responsible for Lloyd’s Registers Business across the North Asia Region, Mark Darley has worked with LR for 18 years in various operational, business and leadership roles across Asia, Europe the Middle East and now leads the Lloyd’s Register team across; Greater China, Japan and Korea. A member of Lloyd’s Register Marine and Offshore Executive team and a Naval Architect, prior to his current role, Mark Darley was President of Lloyd’s Register in the Americas responsible for their Marine and Offshore business across the Americas region.

Dr. Jin Hai is working as General Manager of COSCO SHIPPING - CHINA CINDA Investment Management Co., Ltd.. Before joining this position, he has served as a China Representative of Northern Shipping Funds since 2013. From 2005 to 2012, he served as the Head of the China offices of multiple internationally recognized ship broking companies, including Fearnleys, ACM Shipping, and ICAP Shipping. From 2001 to 2005, Dr. Jin worked in I.M. Skaugen of Norway. He graduated from The People’s University of China (RENMIN University of China) with a Bachelor degree in Economic. Dr. Jin has also studied in Columbia Law School, New York University Stern School of Business, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Manchester Business School, and the Norwegian School of Management. Currently, He is a member of Expert Committee of Board of Directors in Shanghai International Shipping Research Center.

Li Ji Jun is Manager of Project Department for Kongsberg Maritime (KM) China. He is a member of the KM China Senior leadership team. KM is a Business Area in KONGSBERG GRUPPEN ASA. After graduated from Shanghai Maritime University in Master of Marine Engineering, Li has served 18 years with Kongsberg Maritime AS where he started as a Project Engineer and later held various positions. He was accountable for strategic planning, organization development, engineering management, testing & production, field operation and project execution. His operations governed scope from simple automation project to high valued EPCIC project. With insightful understanding of Kongsberg product & technology, and broad international management experience, Li deployed KM China localization process successfully in past 15 years and is currently instrumental in the future growth strategy.

Managing Director with a career spanning 25 years as Naval Architect, Principal Surveyor, General Manager and Technical Director with extensive managerial and international working experience gained through long term international assignments to China, United Kingdom, Luxembourg and further experience from the Nordic area based in Denmark. Graduated in 1993 with a B.Sc. in Naval Architecture and after a short period at A.P. Moller-Maersk's shipyard (Odense Steel Shipyard) in Denmark worked for over 20 years at Lloyd's Register prior to taking up current position as Managing Director for SeaNet Maritime Services & Technical Director for the Liberian Registry (both part of the YCF Maritime Group).
 
John Kollander

John worked until late 1995 at the container shipping Agency “Aseco” with documentation and sales. As from 1996 until 2007, he worked for the Swedish Shipowner “Ahlmark Lines” in Karlstad as Chartering Manager for their fleet of about 15 dry bulk coaster vessels in European trade. From 2007 until 2013, he was employed by Stena RoRo in Gothenburg as Chartering Manager for a fleet of abt 20 RoRo and RoPax vessels. 2013 until present he is working in Shanghai, China for Stena RoRo (Asia) / Stena Shipping as General Manager for Stena’s activities in Asia.

Vivek is Managing Director at Western Bulk, based in Singapore. Apart from his administrative role, he is also responsible for company’s business in Asia and New projects. Vivek has started and managed multiple businesses both in bulk and break-bulk in India/Middle East/Africa and Australia. He joined WBC as operations Manager and has been with them for 11 years, rising progressively through various ranks to now as Managing Director. Previous experiences include dry bulk broker with Braemar Seascope and engineer with NYK on board their ships.
 
Vincent Lai

Mr. Vincent Lai joing Landbridge Holdings Limited in January 2017 and he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for overseeing Landbridge Group's foreign investments covering shipping, port and energy sectors. Vincent has over 20 years of extensive professional experience in shipping and finance. Prior to joining Landbridge Group, Vincent worked with Wah Kwong for over 8 years and served as Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer. Before he joined Wah Kwong in 2008, he held senior positions in COSCO and PricewaterhouseCoopers with focus in shipping IPO and and merges & acquisitions.
Vincent holds a first-class honours degree in Bachelor of Business Administration from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a master degree in Public Finance from Jinan University. He also holds a professional qualification from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. 
 
Zhou Ling

Ling Zhou got her first degree from Foreign Affairs College in Beijing in 1997. She worked for COSCO research team in Beijing and London until 2003 when she went to Cambridge University for her MBA degree. From January 2005 to January 2014, she was working as a director with the Royal Bank of Scotland shipping team in London. She joined China Merchants Financial Leasing company in Shanghai in March 2014 and is now heading up its shipping team.

Since October 2012, Claude Maillot is the Chief Executive of Bureau Veritas China Inc. and the Senior Vice President of Bureau Veritas Group in charge of the Marine & Offshore Division in North Asia. Claude started his career in Bureau Veritas in 1983, and later held various operational and management positions, in Paris Headquarters, Greece, Hong Kong and the Philippines. Claude graduated from the “Ecole Nationale Superieure de la Marine Marchande” (France) and holds both master mariner and marine engineer degrees.
 
Liu Mingfa

Mingfa started his career at sea sailing on a mixture of cargo vessels for six years before commencing a shore based career. He previously worked for V.Ships in Glasgow, prior to being transferred internally to Shanghai to look after new building projectsin Asia, and being promoted to the post of Managing Director for the Region and part of the V Group Asia Board. Later he joined Teekay as the primary representative in China, supporting technical and commercial requirements on newbuilding, conversion and procurement projects as well as on business development. Prior to joining BSM, Mingfa was the Managing Director of Wallem Shipmanagement in China.

Mr. Su Ning has been working and held various managerial positions in the shipping and financing industry since graduating from Dalian Maritime University in 1996. He worked at COSCO Group for more than 10 years and was in charge of S&P and long term chartering. After which he was one of  the founding members of  China Merchants Bank Leasing where he held the position of General Manager of the Ship Leasing Division for 7 years. Currently, he is the Managing Director of Front Line Capital.

Mr. C.K. Ong was born and educated in Singapore He was with Neptune Orient Lines for over 25 years, serving as the EVP and subsequently the Executive Chairman of Neptune Agency till year 2000. He is currently the President of U-Ming Marine Transport where he has been for the last 18 years. He also holds several directorial roles with organisations such as CSBS and Global Energy Maritime. 
 
Rakhi Rastogi

Rakhi Rastogi serves as the regional head of market research and analysis for Cargill’s ocean transportation business based in Singapore. A graduate of Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, Rakhi provides expert insight of global commodities and freight markets. Rakhi started her career with Cargill as a credit risk analyst in Geneva, Switzerland. After two years, Rakhi became a global commodity analyst; she provided fundamental analysis of steel markets to support Cargill’s physical and derivative trading of steel and ferrous scrap. In 2013, Rakhi moved to Singapore to setup the analytics function for Cargill’s metals business, which focused on Chinese steel and global iron ore. Elsewhere, Rakhi has worked for BHP Billiton and held multiple roles in the Indian banking sector. Rakhi holds an MBA from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford where she was a Naomi Molson Scholar. She is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from S.R.C.C, Delhi University.
 
Steve Saxon

Steve Saxon is a Partner in McKinsey & Company’s Shanghai office. Steve joined McKinsey in London in 2000, and transferred to Asia in 2005. He is a core member of our transport, infrastructure and logistics practice, focusing on shipping and ports. His work includes strategy development with container lines, performance improvement through revenue enhancement and cost reduction, and supporting private equity investors into shipping. He has supported several of the recent successful container liner mergers. Steve helps ports in their long term plans and productivity improvement. His recent publications have included the priorities for a container line CEO, the view of shippers on the future container industry, and the cost potential of the new alliances.

Mr. Su has about 20-year extensive experience in ship-owning, investment and operating fields of dry bulk and liner shipping industries throughout Asia and Europe. Mr. Su is also Vice President of China Classification Society (CCS) Mediterranean Committee,a Board member at the Members’ Committee of The London P&I Club, and a Visiting Professor to Dalian Maritime University (DMU). Mr. Su graduated from Dalian Maritime University of China with Bachelor degree in Maritime Law and International Shipping Management, and has a Master degree of Maritime Economics from Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He is an Executive MBA dual-degree holder from IMD Business School of Lausanne, Switzerland and CKGSB of China.

Mr. Varvarenko succeeded in automating and digitalizing the most complex segment of shipping - dry-bulk, wet-bulk and heavy/oversized cargo. His next step is integrating Blockchain on ShipNEXT and introducing a full-scale crypto-currency exchange in sea-freight. Alexander has 17 years experience in shipping industry. He is a Founder of the Ukrainian ShipBrokers Club.

Wei Zhuang is the Regional Manager of Asia, BIMCO. Wei started his BIMCO career with the legal & contractual affairs department where he joined a wide range of BIMCO’s standard contracts and clauses projects, including project development, revision and promotion. He was further promoted as China Liaison Officer as well as the General Manager of BIMCO Shanghai Centre. Now he is committed to keeping a constructive relationship with regional regulators and industry stakeholders and, most importantly, to provide portfolio services to BIMCO members and potential members in Asia. Wei’s previous positions include eight years as a maritime lawyer and Senior Fellow at Maritime University. He has a master’s degree in maritime law and a PhD in international law.

For abt. 6 years, as owner’s supervisor stayed on site for 16 bulk carriers newbuilding of different size, respectively built in major shipyards in China, Japan, and Korea. Work with Classification society GL/ DNVGL for abt.16 years since 2001. Production activities include Survey of ship newbuilding, Fleet in service, material and components, ISM/ISPS/ISO audit, MLC inspection, Offshore Newbuilding, etc. Have technical title of principal surveyor/lead ISO/ISM/ISPS Auditor, MLC inspector. Take various managerial positions as team leader/site officer, deputy station/district manager, and Station/District Manager. As station/district manager, leading 37 staff for Qingdao station covering Newbuilding in 13 site offices, fleet in service and material & component business in Shandong province, China. Start with Seacon Ships Management Co. Ltd. in July 2017, as general manager Newbuilding.

A naval architect, graduated from Shanghai JiaoTong University, 1991.With many years rich experience in shipbuilding industry, acting as Classification society surveyor, Ship owner site project manager and Shipyard technical manager. Have been working seven (7) years for China Classification Society on newbuilding department, ten (10) years for various European ship owners for their newbuilding projects site management at Chinese shipyards and ten (10) years for AVIC shipyards responsible for special projects development and technical management, shipyard design and engineering management, etc. Participated in the first Chinese built 147kcbm membrane type LNG carrier project. Was in charge of the first Chinese built duel fuel propulsion 4700cbm gas carrier project, the world first new-built duel fuel propulsion 15000dwt chemical tanker project and ECO design 25000dwt Stainless steel chemical tanker project, etc. A specialist in the field of newbuilding of Chemical tankers, Gas carriers, RoRo and Passenger ships. Currently acting as Chief Technical Officer taking charge of overall technical management for AVIC Ship group and focusing on Stena RoRo Passenger projects building at AVIC Weihai Shipyard. A member of China Technical Committee of ABS, DNVGL, LR and RINA.
