A Shared Responsibility

TradeWinds Ship Recycling Forum goes digital in 2021. This forum is one of TradeWinds’ most important conferences that brings the whole Ship Recycling industry together to discuss, debate and strategise the way forward amidst the complexities and changing landscapes of the industry.

As the world slowly recovers from the Covid-19 induced recession, the outlook for most shipping markets is the most positive for more than a decade. If not more than rest of the wider shipping industry, the global ship recycling players are also living the breathing the uncertainties in the past 18 months due the pandemic. Even though there’s a slight sign of cooling down in the Indian sub-continent markets recently (mid-August) due to a fall in steel and iron ore price, but scarcity of tonnage has ensured that prices to remain firm, around USD 600 per ldt, on the prevailing high range. Tankers account for more than half the total shipping tonnage scrapped so far in 2021 and there’s more in wet tonnage on the way to the graves for the rest of the year. Despite the demand and corresponding supplies, the uncertainties due to the pandemic is not going to be gone anytime soon with threats of fresh lockdown or restrictions in the major ship recycling cities in the Indian subcontinent. It is normally very difficult to predict the volatility of the local market due to their ever-fluctuating steel plate prices, but it is fair to say that the market looks set for a long period of stability, at least until the start of Q4, where it is anticipated a steady flow of units will return.

Will China reverse ship recycling ban? How the green recycling yards in Europe could be more profitable?

What’s latest with the Regulatory developments: progress towards HKC, roles of the European Commission and of Member States in enforcing EU SRR and EU SSR and last but not the least, influence of domestic regulations on ship recycling?

The interest, awareness and appreciation of sustainable ship recycling continue to increase amongst the cargo owners and ship owners. Some leading names in the finance sector are playing a crucial role in pushing and discussing ship recycling as a part of ESG. More needed to be done for responsible and safer ship recycling industry.

Join us on 26 and 27 October, as we bring together some industry leaders and experts in 4 dedicated sessions, to gain unparallel insights, understanding of the regulations, technical knowledge and reputation risk assessment for profitable, safe and environmentally sound asset disposal.
